Haiti Hospital Appeal Children’s Home

In 2008 we have made the exciting decision to open our first Children’s Home in the north of Haiti.  We’ve started refurbishing an old building surrounded by a beautiful plot of land which we hope to have completed by January 2009.

We now only need to raise £7,000 to complete and fully equip the orphanage ready for use!  We’re looking for individuals and/or corporate groups, schools, churches etc who could help sponsor this work in part or full.

Meet Jeannedo...

In November 2007, on a trip to Haiti, we found Jeannedo, a two year old girl with special needs in the only existing government run hospital in the north of Haiti.  She was in the children’s ward, in an old cot stuck in the corner of a dimly lit room surrounded by many other cots crammed into a tiny space.  Medically she had nothing wrong with her.  A few weeks before we had meet Jeannedo, her mum had brought her into the hospital and handed her to someone, saying... “please hold my baby, I need to fetch something and will be back in a few moments.”  Sadly, the mother never returned.  Like many babies and children in Haiti, Jeannedo had become an orphan.  We were horrified to find Jeannedo still abandoned in that ward four months later when we returned to Haiti, still in an cot having been left there now for over 4 months.

Meet Chelain...

Just one of the many street children we’ve met on our trips to Haiti.  Chelain can’t speak, but through meeting his friends we were able to find out a little about his story, and the stories of other boys like him.  Many of the boys had run away from home because of abusive families, and had been left, many from a very early age to fend for themselves on the dangerous city streets.  Two teenage street boys shared with us how one of their best friends called Peter, had been beaten to death whilst he slept by two older street children.  The streets are a dangerous, hostile and hopeless place, and at the moment there really aren't many places for these children to go.

.We strongly believe that God has placed upon our hearts the calling to try and tackle the injustice of the way these children are left.  The story of Jeannedo particularly touched us, as many children and babies regularly get abandoned at hospitals in Haiti.  We’re sadly aware, that with the building of our first children’s ward this year, other children like Jeannedo may be abandoned in our hospital.  We want to make sure we have in place the means to try and support these children straight away, offering them immediate love and attention at such a distressing and tragic time of their lives.

Thankfully we were able to rescue Jeannedo and provide a foster family for her in Haiti whom we support.  It has been amazing since she has been rescued to see the way she has developed.  However, we want to be able to help many other children in the same situation and need your help to do so.  Please help us today by making a donation or contacting carwyn@haitihospitalappeal.org to find out how you can get involved.  Thank you.

In January 2009 we aim to open up our first Children’s Home, that will be able to offer around 10-15 children a loving, Christian based family, providing each child with the opportunity to be loved, and treated in the special and precious way they deserve!  In 2005, according to UNICEF, an estimated 490,000 children (0-17 years) were orphaned in Haiti for many different reasons.  Since starting work in Haiti we’ve met many of these children, each with their own heart breaking story.  Below are the stories from just two of these children:
