What our Health Centre does:

HHA Health Centre:
Opened in January 2007, our first health centre in Haiti offers urgently needed basic health care to many people. Refurbished by a joint team of UK volunteers and Haitian workers in 2006, the health centre represents our first major project in Haiti. If you want to find out what’s going on at the health centre then this is the page for you. We try to update this page with stories and up to date information as much as we can. Pop back soon!

Basic Health Care:
In Haiti many people can’t even receive basic health care and are left to suffer and sometimes even tragically die from easily avoidable or treatable illnesses. Our Health Centre offers local families with urgently needed basic health care. In our first year we saw over 2,300 patients and helped support many children and adults who may otherwise have never been able to receive such care. Foreign medical teams come through out the year at different points to support this work and offer their skills and encouragement to our staff and the local community.

Food Distribution:
In partnership with The World Food Programme our Health Centre acts as the base for a food distribution programme that seeks to provide food for local families suffering in extreme poverty. Malnourishment is major problem across Haiti, and the recent economic situation has doubled the cost of food for Haitians. Many can no longer afford to even buy rice, and are left to make biscuits from the mud and clay on the ground. Through this programme rice, corn, beans and oil are distributed to some of the worst off in our local area providing lifesaving care.
Health Education and Nutritional Programme:

Health education and prevention are key to our work. Patients are offered regular health education whilst at the clinic where specific and relevant education is provided. We also run a Nutritional Programme where we receive around 100 mothers and toddlers and offer the parents specific health education regarding nutrition. The children are also provided with a good meal, as many of those who turn up are malnourished. Should the children need medical attention they can receive support from our doctors or nurses.

Vaccination Programme and Outreach work:
In 2008 we have been able to establish a new vaccination programme within our Health Centre with authorisation from the Haitian Government. We also have one part time doctor who has been employed as part of a new Health Network in North Haiti who seeks to work on our behalf in isolated communities who don’t have any health care, and are unable to reach our Health Centre.
